How do we balance two totally different, seemingly unrelated things? Like this month we need to find the balance between the Sun in Aries and Moon in Libra. Aries is the astrological energy of intense focus on “Me, Me, Me.” It is about my life, my ambition, my home, my faith, my destiny, my money, and so on. Libra, on the other hand, brings its focus to the question of “You.” It is about your life, your needs, your battles, your hunger, your hate, your love, and so on.

This beautiful image of a woman (The Moon in Libra) and a man (The Sun in Aries) is a perfect illustration for this dilemma. They stand looking at each other, reaching out, but there is something between them that keeps them apart. The large circle in the center holds the key to finding the connection. The thing that is between us can either separate us or be what holds us together. We can fight about our differences or we can find peace in the points of agreement.

We pretty much all agree that things are not going the way that they should and that something needs to change. But we disagree on what needs to change. This Full Moon is suggesting that we start agreeing that things aren’t going so well, and start with that. And then find the places we agree they aren’t going so well, and move ahead with that. This Full Moon is suggesting that we let the obstacles that separate us become opportunities to join us together.

Because this Full Moon is also a total lunar eclipse, the message of balance becomes even more highlighted, since an eclipse is a perfect alignment between the Moon, Earth, and Sun. So the large circle between the Moon/Woman and Sun/Man represents Earth, that place where we all meet together. Earth can become our place of agreed connection. I think we can all agree that food, shelter, water, work, money, health, survival, honeybees, bats, and other natural wonders are important. Let’s put our energy on finding solutions, not blaming each other for the problems. The way to balance Me and You, is to find our place together. It doesn’t mean to ignore my needs in order to meet yours. It means expanding my needs to include your needs and the needs of this planet.

For You: Take some deep breaths and let your body relax. Become aware of your individual body, your personal thoughts, your private needs, and your defined identity and ego. Feel very clearly your personal boundary. Now start to feel yourself expand. Move your thoughts and energies beyond your personal space and out into your house, then to your yard, to your city, state, country, continent, and now world. See the Earth as if you are in space and notice how perfectly beautiful it is. The Earth is your home and the home of every other person alive today. Notice how fragile it is, with only a thin layer of atmosphere around it, protecting it like a bubble. Think of one thing that you need in your personal life that is also needed by the Earth. Now think of another, and then another. Notice all the ways that your ambitions are also the Earth’s ambitions. Take a deep breath and return to your body and get a sense of your expansion. As you go about your day start to notice all the opportunities that arise where you can practice harmony and balance instead of separation and discord. Spend your day building energetic connections and verbal agreements, weaving you and me, together.

New Year 2014 brings life into focus

The rising Sun on the first day of the New Year 2014 brings an opportunity to start anew. The movement from one year to the next is a ritual moment in time that acts as the resetting of a speedometer, clearing out the old and beginning something with a fresh start. Like any birth or ritual moment we can look at the astrological chart and see what possibilities and challenges it holds.

ChartThis year we begin the New Year with a New Moon, an auspicious indicator that emphasizes the fresh beginnings that are possible for us, individually and collectively.  As you look to the Sun as it dawns in 2014, what you won’t see are the other planets that accompany the Sun. But in looking at the astrological chart you can spot the Moon, Sun, Pluto, Mercury and Venus aligned in Capricorn. These five planets are in a grand-cross (sometimes called a grand square) with Uranus in Aries, Jupiter in Cancer, and Mars in Libra. This is a very powerful combination of energies that signifies the birth of a powerful and productive year. You can see these energetic planetary connections in the center of the astrological chart. The grand-cross is indicated with red lines making a tension-filled square with lines in the middle of the square creating a cross. The blue lines indicate harmonious energies between the planets. You can see that both tension and harmony are combined in this chart.

These five planets put the emphasis on Capricorn, an earth energy that calls for a tangible manifestation that is visible for all to see. This is not a hidden quiet energy, but solid and strong, like a mountain erupting. Something will change substantially in the physical world, both your personal world and the collective global society of which we are a part.  And due to the conjunction to Pluto, that change will be transformative and take place from the deepest level of our psyche, since the Moon is also involved. It is a change that is essential, but with Capricorn’s influence, this change will take a lot of focus, dedication and hard work. Mercury in Capricorn brings an intelligence and the need for clear communication to all endeavors. Venus in Capricorn adds compassion and a reminder to foster relationships that are meaningful. There is a call in 2014 to develop evolutionary partnerships so you can build a solid network that can support your personal endeavors and the changes our world needs so desperately.  It is time to acknowledge your inner authority and join it to your outer determination to do something that really matters.

This is not a year where things will be given for free and life will flow from a gentle stream. This is a year demanding action. This is clearly seen in the square to Capricorn by Uranus in Aries and by Mars in Libra. Both Mars and Uranus are planets of action. The Uranus/Pluto square has been mentioned repeatedly as a potent, even revolutionary, drive that can be chaotic, since Uranus tends towards chaos, especially when in the sign of Aries. Mars, which rules Uranus, lies opposite and could indicate increased violence and chaos. But there is also the potential that the energy stirred up by the Uranus/Pluto square can to be channeled into fair and balanced (Libra) actions (Mars).

Jupiter in Cancer is also part of this grand-cross and reminds us that love and caring can be found in abundance in all that we do. Keep your attention on what is really important and instead of focusing on the problems evident in life, build on the possibilities. Neptune and Chiron in Pisces continue to bring a gentle healing energy to our inner wounds and remind us that even though this is a year of physical manifestation, that physical form is always imbued and animated by spirit. The North Node in Scorpio sextiles the planets in Capricorn and repeats the theme for 2014 of using our basic values as the foundation for transforming our material world.

Summer Solstice on June 20, 2012 7:09 p.m EDT

Anne Stokes

During the year the Sun moves through cycles that we have come to know as the Seasons. The Summer Solstice is the point in this yearly cycle when the Sun is at its fullest point. It is like the point in the cycle of a Full Moon, but it happens with the Sun only once a year, while the Moon becomes full once a month. Think of the Summer Solstice as the Full Sun!

Why pay attention to the changing cycle of the Sun?

We are rhythmic creatures. Our physical bodies have their own rhythms. Our hearts beat like a steady drum, and our breath brings the gentle rising and falling of our chest, which gives the sensation of being rocked by the waves of the ocean. We live in communal rhythms of 9 to 5 jobs, Monday through Friday work weeks, and yearly rituals such as birthdays, anniversaries, and religious celebrations.

We are also part of the natural rhythms created by the Sun. The daily cycle of sunrise and sunset creates circadian rhythms that set our awake and sleep cycles. The Sun also creates the seasonal cycle that begins March 21 at the Spring Equinox, when the growing light stirs new growth (and our moods). Next comes June 21st, the Summer Solstice, when the abundance of heat provides the fullness of growth and when we spend the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. During the Fall Equinox of September 21st  the Sun begins its decline and the days become shorter and colder and the earth produces the abundant harvest that we celebrate at Thanksgiving. And the last phase of the cycle begins on December 21st at Winter Solstice, when the cold and darkness take hold and seeds rest in the ground, and we rest in bed.  And every year the Sun begins its cycle anew when the light of Spring again stirs the seeds to growth. It is the original cycle of death and rebirth that has become part of many of our religions.

Participation in communal rhythms, like birthdays and New Year’s Eve, bring us into the emotional, spiritual, and physical bond of community. Likewise, the participation in the earth’s natural rhythms link us to the cosmos and heavens in a deep and profound manner that goes beyond intellectual understanding.

As a society we are losing touch with nature. A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that children spend an average of 7 hours in front of entertainment media in a typical day. This is compared to the only 7 minutes the average child spends outside per day. And the night sky, which used to be such a powerful and awe inspiring part of our lives, has now become faded and nearly forgotten due to city lights and pollution.

By remembering to move in rhythm with natural cycles of the Sun and Moon we re-tune ourselves to the harmony of the cosmos.

We need these natural and cosmic rhythms. We need these connections in order for our Body to slow down from the rush of an overactive life. We need these rhythms for our Mind to clear out the buzz of technology and bring back the sound of silence. But most of all, we need them for our Soul and Spirit. We have within ourselves a natural connection to a divine Spirit, and that connection is hard wired into us through our Soul. But the Soul and Spirit are subtle and quiet and are easily overshadowed by the increased noise of our Mind and Body.

One way to remember our Soul and Spirit and provide them the stimulus they need to become central part of our existence, is to remember our connection to the cosmos and our link to the heavens, which we can do through these solar and lunar cycles.

Venus Transit of the Sun June 5/6

Here is some fascinating information about Venus, that beautiful diamond of a planet that Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, and ancients America have been watching for millennium in the morning and evening sky. Venus has an amazing sky rhythm that brings her back to the same place in the heavens every 8 years. This pattern was seen by many of the ancient peoples as significant, especially the Maya. This 8 year rhythm synchronized two different, but simultaneous calculations of Venus’ motion around the Sun. Since Venus is closer to the Sun than the Earth, she goes around the Sun 13 times in 8 Earth years. But viewed from the Earth, it appears as if Venus goes around the Sun 5 times in 8 Earth years. These numbers of 5, 8, and 13 relate to the Fibonacci series and the Golden Ratio, a proportion used in Greek temples, leaves of plants, and spirals in shells and galaxies. If you drew out Venus’ pattern it would look like a beautiful five petal flower. Due to this repeating pattern, Venus is in the same place every 8 years, so the position of Venus you see today in 2012 was the same as in 2004.

We are now getting to witness a very rare transit of Venus, its first pairing which occurred 8 years ago in 2004. This rare event occurs about every 124 years and this will be only the eighth occurrence (4th pairing) since the invention of the telescope: 1631/1639; 1761/1769; 1874/1882; 2004/2012 and next time in 2117/2125.

This transit will last about 7 hours total, and will appear as a small dot crossing the surface of the Sun. Be sure you use special solar eclipse glasses to view it, because looking at the sun directly, even for a short while, can cause serious damage to your eyes.  The transit will be seen in its totality (for all 7 hours) in the Pacific Ocean region, including Hawaii.  NASA has a live webcast of the event from Hawaii that can be seen at NASA. The transit will be visible around sunset on June 5 in the US and at sunrise on June 6 in most of Europe, and parts of Africa and Asia. This transit was used to measure the size of the solar system in the past, and this year, scientists will reach even further and will use it to measure the size of the Universe!  For a map of the locations and times to view it, as well as lots of other information go to Transit of Venus.

Humans are meaning-making creatures. We look to the events in our life – big and small- and give meaning to them. Venus has been in the sky every night of 2012 saying: “Look at me!”  She has been doing all she can to get our attention. And now, as she moves from her role as the Evening Star into the Morning Star, she is demanding our attention again. Her last appearance as the Evening Star will be on June 5th, as she sets with the Sun, and her first appearance as the Morning Star will be on June 6th, as she rises with the Sun. She only does this every 124 years, and she is doing it now. Look!! See!!

But see what? What does she want of us? The answer lies in who Venus is and what she represents. Venus is the goddess of relationships. She wants there to be love and connection and sharing of beauty. She thrives on intimacy, on really knowing another. Right now she is expressing the sign of Gemini, which she will be in four times longer than she normally expresses a sign. As just stated, Gemini is about being with people that you see as familiar, as a sister or close friend. Venus in Gemini is about friendship. She is asking us to see ourselves when we look into the eyes of another. She is asking us to see how we are alike one another, rather than how we are different. She is asking us to find ways to relate to each other, and to treat each other like the brothers and sisters that we are. She is saying in her own symbolic way the message of love, unity, and compassion that is at the heart of our many religions. She is saying: “When you look at another, see yourself.”

This image really spoke to me as I pondered Venus transiting the Sun. I see this image as the Goddess Venus, powerful, all-knowing, beautiful, and demanding much. Behind her is radiant orange disc of the Sun, and she is exactly in alignment with it. I think it was Jimi Hendrix who said “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.” That is what Venus is saying, that is what Venus wants from us.

To Do: This Venus transit is a perfect time to look inside yourself to see the divine within you and to find a way to bring that divinity out into the world in your relationships with others. It is a time to make a choice to live a conscious life, to be the bigger person, to forgive the flaws of others, and to make peace with yourself. Tibetan Buddhism has a meditation practice called Deity Yoga that is very powerful. You can meditate on this image, or any other image, until you melt into her eyes, and then realize that you are in fact, looking at yourself. The violence, ignorance, abuse, and ecological destruction in this world can not be the way that God or the Goddess intended us to live. Venus is asking you not to hold back your love and compassionate action any longer.

Winter Solstice, New Moon, 2012

Most people think of the Winter Solstice, also known as the first day of Winter, as the shortest and darkest day of the year. This is because the Sun’s light has been decreasing since its peak six months ago at the Summer Solstice. But it is at this depth of darkness that the Sun is reborn, bringing with it an increase in light and illumination. This yearly cycle of the death and rebirth of the Sun has been celebrated for millennium, and represents the birth, death, and rebirth that marks the dance of life on earth.

The celebration of Christmas was linked to the Winter Solstice since Jesus represented the birth of the Son that promised to bring the Christ light on earth. And it was the Magi, Astrologers from Persia, who recognized the Star of Bethlehem as heralding the time, place, and importance of his birth. It may be dark and cold outside, but the Winter Solstice and Christmas point to the knowledge that the seeds of life are alive under the hard earth, ready to rise up when the days become warm again. Life, like the Sun, is never ending and always renewing. Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is also around this same time. This year Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 20th and commemorates the re-dedication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Lighting the candles of the Menorah over the eight days of Hanukkah is a very special ceremony of remembering the light.

During this holy season remember your internal light, the light of the Son/Sun. Winter gives us many opportunities to remember the light within and to find a way to give it birth. Houses are illuminated with tiny lights during the dark winter nights. In our homes we build fires that bring warmth and comfort to the coldest part of the year. Every time you light a candle this winter, take a moment and remind yourself of the light within all life. This is a good reminder that no matter how dark it may look, that the light will come again.

NEW MOON December 24th

The Winter Solstice occurs when the Sun moves from the zodiac sign of Sagittarius into Capricorn. The Moon also moves into Capricorn on December 24th. When the Sun and Moon are together in the same sign, an event that occurs every month, it is known as the New Moon. The New Moon is a time of new beginnings. Since the New Moon takes place in Capricorn, a solid and practical earth sign, take some time on December 24th to think about what you want to bring forth in the area of real, practical, concrete actions. Consider what type of structure you need to create in your life to bring you success in some physical aspect of your life: exercise, job, healthy eating, cleaning your house, fixing up your home, changing your career, and so on.

NEW YEAR 2012

These questions are the perfect thing to ponder as you head into the New Year, one of my favorite rituals of new beginnings. This New Year Eve be a bit reflective and think about what the last year was like. What were your successes, challenges, accomplishments? Then on New Year’s Day, take some time to think about the upcoming year, 2012, and set some broad visions for what you want this new year to be. Then develop some concrete action steps to bring those visions to action.

In Mexico many Mayan cities are starting a year long celebration leading toward December 21st, 2012. They are seeing that date as a time of renewal, not an ending. Popular culture and the media have hijacked the end date on the Mayan calendar as a time to spread fear. But most Mayans and archeologist see that date as referring to the end of one age, and the beginning of another. Much like the end of the Age of Pisces and the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. Many Mayan priests will burn incense, chant, and offer prayers for the new era that will begin very soon. Imagine the world you want to see at this time next year. Think about what you want to be celebrating on December 21st, 2012. Keep a positive vision for the world and take practical actions to manifest that vision. Doom and gloom  forecasts only create more doom and gloom. Resist the power of the dark side!! Bring the light into your heart and let the force be with you. Let this year of 2012 be the year that you step out fully and bring all your gifts, no matter how big or how small, into the world. We all need each other doing all we can in order to make this new era one of peace, justice, and unity. Just for starters, Egypt just had the largest women’s demonstration in their history as thousands of women marched through Cairo on Tuesday calling for an end to military rule. You go girls! Let’s all step up to the call like we never have before in order to bring a wise and caring feminine vision to the world so clearly in need of a new way.

Autumn Begins!!

This morning at 5:05 am EDT the Sun moved into Libra, signifying the beginning of Fall.  And none to soon, I say. In spite of all the challenges of this past summer, we can all look toward this new season with hope in our hearts and vision in our minds.

I love the idea of harvest and have been thinking alot about what I want to harvest in this life. In honor of the Autumn season I brought some offerings to Kuan Yin, and saw her in many ways like Demeter, the loving and caring goddess of the grain. Although these are difficult times for many, there is still much for which to be thankful.

In my Western Humanities class that I teach at UTC, we spent yesterday discussing the wonderful private journal of Marcus Aurelius called Meditations. He was a wise emperor of the 2nd century Rome, and one of the many jewels he said was:

Everything harmonizes with me, which is harmonious to you, O Universe. For me nothing is too early or too late if it is in due time for you. Everything is fruit to me that your seasons bring, O Nature: from you are all things, in you are all things, to you all things return.

Summer Solstice on Tuesday

On the Summer Solstice, Tuesday June 21st at 1:16 pm EDT, the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Cancer and summer officially begins. The yearly cycle of the Sun is similar to the monthly cycle of the Moon.  Both remind us that we are rhythmic creatures. Our physical bodies have their own rhythms. Our hearts beat like a steady drum, and our breath gently brings the rising and falling of our chests, which gives the sensation of being rocked by the waves of the ocean. We live in communal rhythms of 9 to 5 jobs, Monday through Friday workweeks, and yearly rituals such as birthdays, anniversaries, and religious celebrations.

To Do: Take some time around the Solstice to feel the rhythm of the cosmos. If you can, go outside at either sunrise or sunset when the Sun is moving though its daily cycle.  Get comfortable, quiet your busily thinking mind, and slow down your breath. Then connect first to your own body and its rhythms. Feel the gentle beating of your heart, the rise and fall of your chest. Then listen to nature’s rhythms. One of my favorite ways to do this is through the songs of the birds as they sing the Sun awake in the morning, and sing the Sun back to sleep in the evening. Their chorus is one of the great joys available in this world (and its free!). All it takes is just a few moments of slowing down and getting in tune with the sounds and songs of nature. Repeat as needed. I think listening to the birds is one of the best meditations available.

Sun enters Taurus

by Eric Williams

April 20, 2011  Today the Sun, and all the rest of us, can take a deep breath and relax into the sign of Taurus. Taurus is an earth sign, symbolized by the rock solid bull.  It has been a crazy time with Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus in Aries, a fire sign. And now we have  Venus entering Aries, just to add to the excitement.  To read my post on the Aries riot, click here.

We all need to slow down and connect to the earth, get grounded. It is very easy to go too fast and get burned out. Fortunately we have the reminder of how important  earth energy is to soothing our nerves in the upcoming, Earth Day, Friday, April 22nd. It is essential in our fast paced world to get some real honest to goodness downtime. I find that just sitting outside and listening to the wind, and birds, and watching the changing seasons really centers and grounds me. Some people love to cook, or knit, or work with wood. Anything to slow down our synapses so we don’t overload our circuits.

Find some good Earth Day events near to you, and take the day off from electronics. One whole day with no cell phone, twitter, facebook, email, or internet. Wow, amazing thought.

Sun enters Aquarius

January 20, 2011

We have left the month of Capricorn, and what a month it was! Cold, dark, cloudy, dangerous. I think we can all say that we are ready to move on and into the period ruled by the Sun in Aquarius. Aquarius is the “Water Bearer,” so many people think Aquarius is a water sign (the signs are either fire, earth, air, or water.) But, Aquarius is really an air sign, which means it is all about communication, intellect, connection, in short, it is the Social Network sign. Aquarius is also the Age we are entering, you know, the Age of Aquarius (imagine hippies singing and dancing, or just see the ending of The 40 Year Old Virgin).

We enter new ages about every 2000 years due to the precession of the equinoxes (which you now know all about due to my stellar explanation, which if you missed, is available in my blog.) People often ask if we have entered the Age of Aquarius yet, and I am here to predict that if Social Network wins best picture at the Academy awards, I will officially declare the beginning of the Age of Aquarius! I’m being a bit tongue in cheek here, but there is some truth to this. Aquarius is ruled by the planet Uranus, and it is all about the new age, globalization, humanitarianism, technology, social networking, facebook, internet, twitter, and even the slow demise of hard copy books in favor of downloads. All of these things are readily available in this day and age. There was even a revolution in Iran last year (which in my mind was the most exciting and encouraging sign of 2010) that was fueled by cell phones and twitter. So, if this isn’t the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, I don’t know what is.

But what does this mean to you personally? I would like to encourage you to start reading the news, either in your local paper, or from a relatively bias free zone like cnn.com or nytimes.com. You could even take an international approach and read the news from another country, like England at bbc.com. I love the PBS newhour which has a wonderful dialogue between David Brooks (conservative) and Mark Shields (liberal). Open up your mind, include the larger world in your thinking, go beyond 140 characters on twitter, starting seeing the entire world like it is your backyard. This is what Aquarius would do.

I love this image. This is the Star card from the Waite-Rider Tarot deck, and it represents Aquarius. Aquarius is the nexus, the matrix, the network, the connection to the grid. It is the neosphere. Expand your horizons. Keep one foot squarely planted on the ground with a strong sense of reality and one foot in the water, in touch with your emotions. Notice that from the water pitcher pouring on the land, that there are five streams. These are the streams of our senses: sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste. The bright star is the Higher Self, our divine nature. And the seven smaller stars are our Chakras, through which our Higher Self shines its divine light.

Aquarius at its highest level is our connection to the unknowable state of consciousness of God/dess. At the human level it is our connection to each other. Wow, I feel better already.

Sun enters Sagittarius

by Eric Williams

The Sun moves into Sagittarius on Monday, November 22nd. Fasten your seat belts, the flight is departing. From the depths to the heights. The day the Sun enters Sagittarius it joins both Mercury and Mars which gives the Sun an extra boost. Jupiter is also moving into Aries on January 22nd, bringing in even more pioneering spirit to our endeavors, especially since it has been hanging around with that rebel Uranus.

The symbol for Sagittarius is the archer, leaning back, bow aimed, cocked, and ready to soar. All that is required is letting go of the arrow. Sagittarius has enthusiasm and spirit and brings in an energy quite optimistic and visionary. There is an absolute “can do” attitude with Sagittarius and it calls on us to expand our horizon. It is time to quit holding back, to aim our bows and charge forward.

based on image at Nasa.gov

Sagittarius is literally pointing to our need for bigger visions and expanded energy. It you look towards the constellation Sagittarius in the sky, and let your gaze keep on expanding outward you will find yourself looking right at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, called the Galactic Center. Just last week scientists discovered two massive bubbles at this center. The bubbles span half the visible sky, have highly defined edges, and are emitting gamma rays energy. Gammy rays are the highest form of light in the universe. Scientists don’t understand the origin or nature of these bubbles, or the energy they are emitting. They have some possible theories, including that something is coming from the black hole at the center of our galaxy. For more on this amazing event go to www. nasa.gov

Suddenly that center in our galaxy seems really close. We’re in the midst of a paradigm shift where we are looking at things and pondering ideas that we’ve never considered before. Think big, really big. As Henry Thoreau said “Go boldly in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” This month of Sagittarius will be a great month to work on our visions, decide what our highest contributions can be, take our passions and give them form. We don’t want to hold back on setting forth our visions any longer, but instead  “Boldly go where no one has gone before.”
